Tuesday, October 1st Beaver Hike 10am

Did you know that MLSP is home to a thriving population of North America’s largest rodent? We will walk along the Wetlands Walk and Mud Pond trails where we can view our beaver’s dam and lodges while we learn all about how they live, love, and learn. This program is for people of all ages, it’s an easy-moderate hike of about 2.5 miles. Pay $1 per child and $5 per adult (cash or check) at the office upon arrival. Wednesday, October 2nd New Moon at the Observatory 6:30pm
Come to the beach to take a view at the dark sky with our telescope. We have a volunteer astronomer to teach us about the stars! Please register in advance by calling 518-793-0511.

Thursday, October 3rd Homeschool Pop-up: Autumn 10am

This program is all about fall! We will be covering topics of animal behavior, leaves changing and weather changes. This program is geared toward homeschool students ages 6-12 years old, but all are welcome. Please register in advance by calling 518-793-0511.

Fridays October 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th Wiggly Wanderers *Recurring Program*

Wiggly Wanderers is a casual and fun program that is offered to walking toddlers, carriable babies and their caregivers. This will be a beginner’s hike/wander series with not too much distance for toddlers who are ready to move and caregivers who are willing and able to baby wear and/or carry their toddler if their legs get too tired. Strollers will not work for these programs. We meet at the nature center parking lot. $1 per child. Registration is not required for this program.

Saturday October 5th K9 Tick Awareness and Disease Prevention 10ma-12pm

Meet with a seasoned and retired vet tech turned Park Educator to talk about tick awareness and disease prevention including but not limited to lyme, ehrlichia and anaplasmosis information.  This is a drop in event at the nature center.  Friendly and well-behaved dogs are welcome, please keep everyone leashed.

Sunday, October 6th Big Bend Hike 10am

Join an educator on this flat hike of about 6 miles at our beautiful new space with great birding and wildlife viewing, and gorgeous views of mountains and the Hudson River. Better for ages 14+. Please dress appropriately for the weather with hiking shoes, plenty of water and a lunch or snack.  We will meet at the park office and caravan to the new trailhead. Program is $5 per adult, $1 for under 18 (cash or check). Please register in advance by calling the office at 518-793-0511.

Sunday, October 6th Autumn Leaves 1pm

Have you ever wondered what makes the leaves change? Why are they all different colors? Why do some leaves hang on the whole winter long? Join a nature center educator to have these questions answered and more! Open to all ages.

Monday, October 7th Big Bend: Beginner Bird Watching 8:30am

Calling all beginner birders! Bring your binoculars if you have them and we will check out the wide variety of over 100 species of birds that we have identified at our new preserve. This will be a short start-and-stop hike. We will meet at the park office and caravan to Big Bend. Geared toward ages 12+. Program is $5 per adult, $1 for under 18 (cash or check). Wednesday, October 9th Moreau Lake Kayak 1pm

Join an educator on a peaceful morning paddle around Moreau Lake. Limited rentals are available or bring your own kayak. This program is for people aged 18 and older if you need to rent a kayak or 13+ if you have your own kayak. The cost is $5 (or $15 including kayak rental). Check in and pay (cash or check) at the office upon arrival. Please register in advance by calling the office at 518-793-0511.

Thursday, October 10th Potters Point Hike 10am

Join an educator on a fun and mild bushwack hike.  There are some deer paths and well worn walkways we can follow but we will be exploring this beautiful piece of property.  This program is for people of all ages, it’s an easy-moderate hike of about 1 miles. Pay $1 per child and $5 per adult (cash or check) at the office upon arrival. Please register in advance by calling 518-793-0511.

Saturday, October 12th Appreciate Local Birds 9am

Appreciating local birds and long-distance migration.  We will discuss the importance of controlling light pollution to lesson the impact on our migratory birds. Open to all ages, reservations not required. $5 per adult, $1 per child.

Sunday, October 13th Celebration of Indigenous Peoples 1pm

Join a nature center educator for a lesson on indigenous geography- which tribes live(d) where- and the food, traditions, dress and belief systems of native tribes in our area. Open to all ages, reservations not required. $5 per adult, $1 per child.

Monday, October 14th Gratitude Walk 10am

Come to Moreau for a guided Nature Walk. As we go we’ll pay particular attention to the beauty and peace of our natural surroundings and focus on our gratitude for being here to appreciate it. This is a beginner-rated walk on the Nature Trail, suitable for those of all ages. Please register in advance by calling 518-793-0511.

Monday, October 14th Baker to Moreau Overlook 1pm

Join an educator on a moderate-hard 2.5 mile hike from Baker Trail to Moreau Overlook with a beautiful view of our lake from above. Please wear the appropriate attire for the weather- sunscreen, bug spray and water-resistant hiking shoes. Bring a snack and plenty of water. We will meet at the park office and caravan to the trailhead. This hike is for people 15+. The cost is $5 for adults (cash or check). Wednesday, October 16th Big Bend Full Moon Hike 6:30pm

Join a park educator on a beginner hike at the new Big Bend Preserve. If the clouds cooperate, we’ll get to enjoy the splendor of the full “Harvest” moon rising! This hike is family friendly and well-behaved dogs on a 6 foot or shorter leash are welcome. $1 per child, $5 per adult is payable by cash or check at the office upon your arrival. We will meet at the park office and caravan to the trailhead. To reserve your spot call 518-793-0511- the earlier the better as this is a popular program and it fills up quickly.

Saturday, October 19th Halloween Needle Felted Creatures 10am-2pm

Join a talented needle felter and try out this fun craft that should result in a very cute or creepy take home.  Please register in advance by calling the office at 518-793-0511. $5 for adults and $1 for children.

Sunday, October 20th Ghastly Crafts 10am

Need some friendly ghosts to “haunt” your home? Join a nature center educator to make ghastly crafts such as leaf ghost window clings, egg carton ghost portraits and lollipop ghosts. Open to all ages. Please register in advance by calling the office at 518-793-0511, cost is $1 per person.

Sunday, October 20th Spiders: a Cute Creepy Crawly Critter 1pm

Spiders lend a helping hand (or eight) in balancing our ecosystem! Join a nature center educator to learn about spider life cycles, native spiders and the importance of spiders in our natural communities. Open to all ages.

Thursday, October 24th Homeschool Pop-up: Nocturnal Animals

This program is all about our animals in the night. Learning about their behaviors and the benefits it brings to their ecosystem. This program is geared toward homeschool students ages 6-12 years old, but all are welcome. Please register in advance by calling 518-793-0511.

Saturday, October 26th Bat Week Celebration 10am

In honor of Bat Week, we will be educating people at the nature center on the need for conservation of bats and how important they are to the health of an ecosystem, and doing a small craft. Registration is not required, drop in anytime during open Nature center hours 10-3pm

Sunday, October 27th Halloween Bash 3:30pm

The Friends of Moreau Lake are putting on their annual Halloween event, there will be games, nature-based education, and most importantly fun! Please register in advance for this event by calling 518-793-0511.

Monday, October 28th Lake Bonita-Waterfall-Western Ridge-Lake Ann Loop Hike 10am

We will be hiking a more difficult loop hike that connects the Lake Bonita, Waterfall, Western Ridge, and Lake Anne Trails. The hike is approximately 6 miles. Please wear the appropriate attire for the weather- sunscreen, bug spray and water-resistant hiking shoes. Bring a snack or lunch and plenty of water. We will meet at the park office and caravan to the trailhead. This hike is for people 15+. The cost is $5 for adults (cash or check). Please register ahead by calling the office at 518-793-0511.
