Join the park educators as they guide and share their knowledge of the park and surrounding environment during the month of April. You will be sure to have fun, learn and have memorable experiences to share.

Monday, April 1st 9:00 a.m. Forest Bathing
Coined shinrin-yoku in Japan in the 1980’s, forest bathing is the ecotherapeutic practice of spending time immersed in nature, absorbing it with all of your senses. The physiological and psychological benefits last for days afterward with the additional benefit of a new appreciation of our precious woodland and its inhabitants. This is a beginner-rated walk along the Nature Trail with long pauses to sit and enhance our awareness of our surroundings, it is an approximately 2-hour program. A small mat is beneficial to ensure a dry seat. This program is limited to those age 14 and up. Pay $5 per person (cash or check) at the office upon arrival. Monday, April 1st 10a.m. Kid Friendly Potters Point Hike
A park educator will lead you and your family on a roughly 1 mile hike, that is off trail in a lesser known part of the park. This is not stroller friendly and there will be some muddy areas and terrain that will take some thought from those with little legs. We will take our time and enjoy however much our group is up for and we can make this hike shorter if needed. Please dress yourself and children appropriately with clothes that can get wet and dirty and shoes to keep their feet dry. This program will be $1 per child. Monday, April 1st 1:00 p.m. Beaver Walk
Did you know that MLSP is home to a thriving population of North America’s largest rodent? We will walk along the Wetlands Walk and Mud Pond trails where we can view our beaver’s dam and lodges while we learn all about how they live, love and learn. This program is for people of all ages, it’s an easy-moderate hike of about 2.5 miles. Pay $1 per child and $5 per adult (cash or check) at the office upon arrival. Tuesday April 2nd 12p.m. – 2 p.m. Eclipse Viewers and Craft
We will spend the day in the nature center talking about the eclipse and making viewing “cameras” out of cereal boxes as well as making a simple craft to help understand what is happening during the eclipse on April 7th. Anyone who wants to join is welcome, please bring a cereal or cracker shaped box to make into your own viewer to take home, all other supplies will be on hand. This is a drop-in program so come whenever you like during the 10am-2pm hours. However we do ask you call to register so that we have enough supplies! Tuesday April 2nd 2:30 p.m. Reptile Profile
Join an educator in the nature center to meet our resident reptiles! We at Moreau take care of six New York native turtles and two snakes that cannot be released into the wild and are wonderful little educators. Learn about their exciting lives, what they like to eat, and what they use for shell-ter at the Nature Center. The cost is $5 for adults, $1 for children (cash or check) at the office upon arrival. Wednesday, April 3rd 9:00 a.m. Stonewall Hike
This less-traveled trail is a little over 3 miles and rated as easy. Situated across the river from us, with historical interest including an old foundation, this trail is a must-do. Thursday, April 4th 1:00p.m. Earth Day Experiments
April is Earth Month, celebrate with us at MLSP! We’ll have 3 experiments- Storm Runoff, Oil Spill Clean-up, and Slime Making. Dress for mess! The cost is $1 per child, payable by cash or check at the office upon your arrival. Reserve your spot in advance by calling 518-793-0511.

Friday, April 5th @ 8:30 a.m. Eagle Watch
Join a Park Educator on a convoy-style journey along the Hudson River to try to spot our local Bald Eagles. We will be getting in and out of vehicles at a few locations and, with a little luck, viewing the eagles through binoculars and a scope so make sure to bring your hat and gloves! If you have binoculars bring them, we do have a couple of pair to pass around as well. $5 program fee payable at the office upon your arrival (cash or check). To reserve your spot call 518-793-0511.

Wiggly Wanderers is a casual and fun program that is offered to walking toddlers, carriable babies and their caregivers. This will be a beginner’s hike/wander series for toddlers who are ready to move and caregivers who are willing and able to baby wear and/or carry their toddler if their legs get too tired. We will not plan too much distance walking and we will rely on teachable moments to carry us through these experiences. Strollers will not work for these programs. While you do not need to attend each week, we will continue to build our toddlers hiking skills as well as their caregivers’ confidence taking the children into the woods to explore. This event does not have sign ups, please come if you can. We meet at the nature center parking lot. $1 per child. For any questions call 518-793-0511.

Saturday April 6th 11:00a.m. -1:00p.m. Mandala and Zen Tangle Nature Inspired Pattern Crafts
Join an educator at the nature center where we will be creating nature-inspired symmetrical mandalas and asymmetrical Zen tangles out of paper. This is fun for all ages and is a drop-in activity, so no registration required.

Join an educator for World Art Day in making your own nature journal. Nature journals are a great way to write down your discoveries and engage in the world around you. Become a Guerilla Gardener! Learn what to plant (and what not to) to improve declining pollinator populations. Make seed bombs to increase habitat and food sources for our insect allies. Join an educator this National Exercise Day on a hike. A more difficult hike of 6 miles from Western Ridge, to Ridge Run, to Eastern Ridge with viewpoints along the Western Ridge Trail. Bring a lunch or snack, plenty of water, waterproof shoes, and appropriate clothing for the weather. A fun and creative way to celebrate earth day is to reduce, reuse and recycle. Please come to the nature center to work on a craft reusing commonly recycled items. This craft will be led by your imagination and artistic vision. We will provide the materials. If you have a vision but need something from your own recycling bin, please feel to bring it along. Monday, April 22nd 2p.m. Moreau Lake Kayak Trip
Join a ACA certified kayak instructor/educator on a peaceful afternoon paddle around Moreau Lake. We will cover some basic strokes and safety before getting out on the water which will be great for beginners as well as seasoned kayakers. Limited rentals are available or bring your own kayak. Tuesday, April 23rd 5:30p.m. Hiking Preparedness
Join an educator at the nature center to plan for the upcoming summer hiking season. Learn how to plan and prepare for hiking with a demonstration on what to put in your pack, first-aid basics, and leave no trace ethics. The cost is $5 per adult and $1 per child.

Tuesday, April 23rd 7:00 p.m. Full Moon Hike
Join a Park Educator on a beginner hike around Moreau Lake. If the clouds cooperate, we’ll get to enjoy the splendor of the moon rising above the mountains! This hike is family friendly and well-behaved dogs on a 6 foot or shorter leash are welcome. $1 per child, $5 per adult is payable by cash or check at the office upon your arrival. Sunday April 28th 10:00 a.m. Trail Steward Meeting
A meeting to introduce the trail steward program to newcomers. The duties of a trail steward include walking the trails of Moreau Lake State Park to identify and report maintenance needs, light trail maintenance including cutting back branches with supplied hand saws and loppers and hanging trail signs when necessary. This meeting will provide crucial information on what to look for on the trails. Established trail stewards are welcome to come, but it is not mandatory. This meeting is free. Learn how to plan and prepare for hiking with a demonstration on what to put in your pack, first-aid basics, and leave no trace ethics. If you are able, we will then go on a hike around Mud Pond, this is an easier hike around 2.5 miles in total please be prepared with appropriate clothes and boots. The cost is $5 per adult and $1 per child.
