MOREAU KAYAK TRIP
The Environmental Educator will lead this beginner’s paddle around the lake pointing out wonderful sights that are more enjoyable from an up-close perspective given by a kayak. Reservations are required with 24 hours advanced notice, please call or text 518-917-2174. Cost is $5 for adults, $1 for children. A limited number of kayaks are available to rent at $15. Please pay and meet at the park office.

We’ll begin with a nature- themed story time, read a book or two and talk about what we’ve read. Afterward we will go for a short walk outside so dress according to the weather! Geared towards ages 2-5. Pay $1 per child (cash or check) at the office and then come down to the Nature Center. Registration is required at least 24 hours in advance; call or text 518-917-2174.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 6TH

WIGGLY WANDERERS
Wiggly wanderers is a new program that is offered to walking toddlers, carriable babies and their caregivers. This will be a beginner’s hike/wander series for toddlers who are ready to move and caregivers who are willing and able to baby wear and/or carry their toddler if their legs get too tired. We will not plan too much distance walking and we will rely on teachable moments to carry us through these experiences. Strollers will not work for these programs. While you do not need to attend each week, we will continue to build our toddlers hiking skills as well as their caregivers’ confidence taking the children into the woods to explore.

STRETCHING ON THE SHORE
Join park naturalists as we take in the morning calm of our beautiful lake and the nature that surrounds us. We’ll stretch our limbs on the beach before the bustle of the day. This is a low impact program designed to reduce stress and open our minds and bodies. A yoga mat or beach blanket will be beneficial. All ages are welcome. Pay $5 per adult (cash or check) at the office upon arrival. Registration is required at least 24 hours in advance; call or text 518-917-2174.

Coined shinrin-yoku in Japan in the 1980’s, forest bathing is the ecotherapeutic practice of spending time immersed in nature, absorbing it with all of your senses. The physiological and psychological benefits last for days afterward with the additional benefit of a new appreciation of our precious woodland and its inhabitants. This is a beginner- rated walk along the Nature Trail with long pauses to sit and enhance our awareness of our surroundings and it is approximately a 2-hour program. A small mat is beneficial to ensure a dry seat. Pay $5 per adult (cash or check) at the office upon arrival. Registration is required at least 24 hours in advance; call or text 518-917-2174.

POTTERS POINT HIKE
Take a walk in the woods on this easily navigable and trail free parcel of the park. There will be beautiful views of the Hudson River and some neat natural wonders to explore. This is a flat, bushwhacking hike. Reservations are required with 24 hours advanced notice, please call or text 518-917-2174. Meet and pay at the park office. $1 for kids $5 for adults.

MONDAY, JULY 11TH

KID’S FISHING CLINIC
Come to Moreau to learn the basics of fishing. We will discuss what kinds of fish live in the lake and how to cast. This is a free event; equipment is provided but limited so please call 518-917-2174 with 24-hour notice to make a reservation.

BUG HOTEL
Insects are incredibly beneficial as well as fascinating. In this program we will build a ‘hotel’ out of reclaimed materials to attract and house insects. We will learn about their importance to our environment and our daily lives. This will run about an hour+. Geared toward school-age children; all are welcome. This is a guided hike around Moreau Lake after hours. We will get to experience the woods at night while viewing the full moon. This will be about a 2-3-mile hike on relatively flat terrain. Join a park educator as we go into our woods to explore! We will walk to a close by creek. There, we will look under logs and rocks searching for cool critters. We will meet and pay for the event at the park office. There is a short, about .25 mile walk down the road to the creek.

LAKE BONITA HIKE
Join and environmental educator on a hike around Lake Bonita. This hike is around 3 miles through the woods. There isn’t too much of an incline but there are some ups and downs with some technical root spots. This hike is rated easy to moderate. Please call or text 518-917-2174 to make a reservation with 24-hour notice. Cost is $5 for adults and $1 for children. We will meet and pay at the park office then drive over together to the Lake Bonita parking lot.

TUESDAY, JULY 19TH

WATER STUDY
Join Environmental Educator as we look in the water and try to scoop up aquatic macroinvertebrates. Aquatic macroinvertebrates are insects in their nymph and larval stage that play a huge role in freshwater ecosystems. This will be a fun wet event where we will just try to look at the different insects in the water. Please bring appropriate clothing for getting in the water and getting wet. Geared towards school-aged children. Registration is required at least 24 hours in advance; call or text 518-917-2174.

This is an easy-going walk designed to bring families together in nature. We’ll set out from the park office keeping a lookout for birds, animal tracks and plant life. Our route will be determined by the age and ability level of the participants but whichever direction we take we’ll have fun and learn together. This hike is one of our most strenuous here at Moreau. We will be hiking about 1 mile up to the beautiful view of Moreau Lake. This is a steep hike and towards the end it gets a bit rocky. Bring plenty of water and a snack or lunch to eat at the overlook. Registration is required with 24 hours advanced notice, please call or text 518-917-2174.
