January – Park Guided Hikes and Events

Join the park environmental educators as they lead hikes and events throughout January. Download flyer HERE

Please Note: the time it takes to complete the hikes may vary depending on the abilities of each participant so please plan accordingly.

Thursday January 6th Knee High Naturalist 10am AND 2pm

It is story time with an environmental educator. This event is geared for children aged 2-5 years old. We will read a short story or two about nature then go for a short walk. Cost is $1 per child. Please call 518-917-2174 to make a reservation. We will meet outside the nature center at the pavilion.

Friday January 7th Eagle Watch 9:30am

Join an environmental educator on a ride along the Hudson River looking for eagles. We will drive over to different pull offs along Spier Falls road to stop and look for Bald Eagles. We will drive to a couple different locations then get out of our vehicles to look around for Bald Eagles. Please bring binoculars if you have them. Sighting is not guaranteed. Please call to make reservations at 518-917-2174. Cost is $5 for adults and $1 for children. Meet and pay at the park office.

Saturday January 8th Eagle Watch 9:30am

Join an environmental educator on a ride along the Hudson River looking for eagles. We will drive over to different pull offs along Spier Falls road to stop and look for Bald Eagles. We will drive to a couple different locations then get out of our vehicles to look around for Bald Eagles. Please bring binoculars if you have them. Sighting is not guaranteed. We will meet inside the Warming Hut for story time, then head out for a walk along the lakeshore to see what nature has to show us. Geared toward ages 2-5. Registration is required at 518-917-2174. Cost is $1 per child.

Join us as we hike from the office down to the Warming Hut, across to the lake and back up to the office. We’re sure to see animal habitats and tracks! For kids of all ages and their guardians. Registration is required, please call 518-917-2174. Cost is $1 per child.

Tuesday January 11th Spring Overlook Hike 11am

Join an environmental educator on a guided hike up to the Spring Overlook. This is about a 1 mile trek uphill to the overlook then a mile hike back down. We will meet at the park office where you will stop to pay and then we will drive over to the spring parking lot and start our hike from there. Cost is $5 per adult and $1 per child. If conditions are icy plan to bring some kind of traction device for your boot, if you don’t have any we have limited pairs available at the office. If snowshoes are needed we do have rentals available. Please call 518-917-2174 to register.

Wednesday January 12th Interview with a Box Turtle 10am

Meet Daryl, a very special turtle, and learn fun and fascinating facts about Box Turtles. Suitable for kids of all ages. Registration is required at 518-917-2174. $1 per child. Pay at the office and meet at the Nature Center.

Thursday January 13th Lake Ann Loop 9:30am

This guided hike is led by an environmental educator over to the Lake Ann lean to. We will stop to pay and meet at the park office then drive over to the Lake Bonita parking lot. From the trailhead at Lake Bonita we will hike down to Lake Ann then head over onto the Western Ridge trail where we will take that to the Waterfall trail back to Lake Bonita. This will be an advanced hike due to the length at around 5-6 miles. Please call to make a reservation at 518-917-2174. Cost is $5 for adults and $1 for children.

Friday January 14th Fire Starting 10am

This program is geared for kids 10+ years old. Join an environmental educator to learn how to start a fire when you are camping. We will discuss some Leave No Trace Principles about minimizing campfire impacts and how to start a fire. This event will be held outside so please dress accordingly. Reservations are required. Please call 518-917-2174. Stop at the office to pay, cost is $1 per child, then head down to the warming hut at the outside firepit where we will meet.

Monday January 17th Full Moon Hike 6pm

This is a guided hike around Moreau Lake after hours. We will get to experience the woods at night while viewing the full moon. This will be about a 3 mile hike on relatively flat terrain. Reservations are required, please call 518-917-2174. Cost is $5 for adults and $1 for children. We will meet at the park office.

Saturday January 22nd Kid’s Ice Fishing 10am-2pm

Have you ever wondered how to ice fish? Come to Moreau to get a beginner lesson and maybe even reel up a fish. Equipment provided. Registration is required. Please call 518-917-2174. Stop at the office to pay for the event, $1 per child, then head down to the warming hut. Warming hut will be open with hot cocoa. This is weather dependent. If there isn’t enough ice we will cancel.

Tuesday January 25th Red Oak Ridge Hike 11am

Join an environmental educator on an interpretive led hike along the Red Oak Ridge trail. This trail traverses half way up the mountain range and connects to the Western Ridge trail. From there we will go over to Mud Pond and make our way back up to the office. This is a moderate hike at about 4+ miles round trip. Please call 518-917-2174 to make a reservation. We will meet and pay, $5 for adults and $1 for children, at the park office.

Wednesday January 26th Beaver Lodge Walk and Talk 10am

Together we will visit our Back Pond beaver lodge, a short walk from the nature center, and view the beavers’ interesting abode. After, we will warm up in the Nature Center to discuss all things beaver. Kids of all ages will learn something new about our furry friends. Reservations are required at 518-917-2174. Cost is $1 per child. Pay at the office and meet at the Nature Center.

Thursday January 27th Eastern Ridge Loop 9:30am

This guided hike will traverse the Eastern Ridge trail from the Western Ridge trailhead. Once we reach the Ridge Run we will loop back to the Western Ridge trail back to the parking area. This will be an advanced to expert hike due to length at about 6-7 miles. The first mile we will be hiking up the Western Ridge trail from the spring parking lot so there will be an incline. Once on the Eastern Ridge it is relatively flat with some ups and downs. You must call to make a reservation at 518-917-2174. Cost is $5 for adults and $1 for children. We will meet and pay at the park office then drive over to the spring parking lot where we will start our hike.
