The next time you visit our Park you may notice something new, Floating Treatment Wetlands in the lake! In recent years there has been increased nutrient loads throughout our waterbodies, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus, that can cause algal blooms. Biologists from NYS Parks are in the process of constructing these Floating Treatment Wetlands to try and treat the excess nutrient problem in our lake. These floating botanical islands contain native wetland plants, that will absorb the excess nutrient buildup, help oxygenate the water, and provide safe havens for fish and other wildlife.
For more information about HABs you can DOWNLOAD the presentation given by Casey Holzworth at our ZOOM Chili Dinner last year. It contains valuable information about this increasing threat.
